The Art of Dance!

Many thanks to Whitney Peach for this article.  Whitney currently bartends at Ultrabar and Lima and is also a weekly contributor to the Washington Examiner.

Dance is an art form.   It is used as a form of expression, social interaction, exercise and sometimes for no reason at all.   It can also be a form of nonverbal communication even performed by animals as a mating dance.  So maybe think about the mating thing next time you are gyrating at the club and be careful………. You’re welcome.

Dance shows have always been a popular on TV.   From back in the day with Soul Train and Eric Neis’ The Grind on MTV (a personal favorite of mine) to today’s hits Dancing with the Stars, Dance Crew and the hilarious Dance Your Ass Off.

Dancing is obviously ingrained in people from any culture.  DC is a melting pot and Ultrabar is definitely representative of the mix.  It’s like the UN in there, that is of course if the UN had live video mixin, lasers, 6 bars, 5 levels and 4 DJs (this may not be a bad idea, lighten the crowd up a bit).  Nowhere else in DC have I seen a greater diversity in the styles of dance than at Ultrabar.  Since each floor has a different music format for each night, they each evoke some major dance moves amongst club goers.

Sometimes I look around Ultrabar and in one corner you have a group of girls dancing amongst themselves in a small circle.  Nearby there is a group of guys kind of shifting from foot to foot checking out the dancing quintet.  Then, in the table section there are girls dancing on the couches.  Never is there a shortage of couples grinding like they are not in public and the rest of the club (in their minds) is not watching in horror and disbelief.

The other night, on my journey to the bathroom, yes from where I stand it is quite a journey making my way through the crowd that packs Ultrabar from the time we open at 9pm for the one hour open bar on the main floor until it closes.  Anyway, at the far end of the main floor a circle of about twenty people had formed around what can only be described as a dance off.  Turn by turn each dancer showed their skills.  I happened to catch the break dancer on his back and jumping like some Cirque du Soleil performer.  I remember watching reruns of Soul Train and this wasn’t far off.

Then, we have the Glow Girls who make their appearance on Friday night making sure you get the dancing started on each level.  Their moves always entice a crowd of girls to get up on the risers on the main floor and attempt their own routine of sorts.

The middle, Latin Floor, is host to twirling and salsa dancing and all kinds of moves that would end with a broken neck on my part.  I’d say this looks like a Latin version of Dirty Dancing,   (Didn’t they make that movie?) Yes they did in fact it was called Havana Nights!

House music usually means the arrival of glow stick clad club goers who can be spotted anywhere, from the basement level to the top floor Chroma, which really gets going on Saturdays with DJ Saam who spins house and international music.

With all the drinks specials like $4 Dos Equis, $6 Patron Espresso shots, $6 Rum and Cokes and $150 Kettle One Vodka bottles, my head would be the only thing dancing.

But every Thursday, Friday and Saturday crowds flock to Ultrabar and show off their skills.  Luckily my clumsy self realized at 8 that there weren’t enough jazz and ballet classes to help these two left feet.  I’m happy where I stand behind my bar of safety, watching the show.
